In Georgia, legal tint is measured by VLT — the percentage of light the filmed glass lets through. The numbers below are the darkest tint the law allows at each window position, labeled VLT MAX: install film darker than the listed VLT and the vehicle is out of compliance. Figures are compiled from official Georgia state sources; laws change, so confirm the current statute before you tint.
| Window | Darkest Legal (VLT MAX) | Reflectivity |
|---|---|---|
| Front side and door windows | 28% (±3%) | 20% |
| Rear side and door windows — passenger car | 15% (±3%) | 20% |
| Rear windshield — passenger car | 15% (±3%) | 20% |
| Rear side windows and rear windshield — multipurpose passenger vehicle | No restriction (§ 40-8-73.1(c)(6)(A) exempts them from subsection (b)) | — |
Georgia Windshield Rule
No material or glazing may be applied to the front windshield if it reduces light transmission through the windshield (§ 40-8-73.1(b)(1)). One exception: a transparent item that is not red or amber in color may be placed on the uppermost six inches of the windshield (§ 40-8-73.1(c)(4)). Georgia measures the strip in inches from the top — the statute does not use an AS-1 line. Required federal, state, or local stickers and certificates are separately exempt (§ 40-8-73.1(c)(5)).
How to Read These Numbers
- Front side and door windows: Front side windows — driver and front passenger — are the most tightly regulated and the ones checked first at a traffic stop or inspection.
- Rear side and door windows — passenger car: Rear side windows are usually allowed darker than the fronts, and on SUVs, trucks and vans they are sometimes exempt from the passenger-car limit.
- Rear windshield — passenger car: The windshield rule controls the strip at the top of the glass and how far film or a visor band may extend down. Most states allow a non-reflective strip above the manufacturer's AS-1 line.

Georgia Tint Law Questions
What is the darkest legal tint in Georgia?
For front side windows, Georgia allows tint down to 28% (±3%) — the VLT MAX. Rear windows may allow darker film; check the table above for each position.
What are Georgia's windshield tint rules?
No material or glazing may be applied to the front windshield if it reduces light transmission through the windshield (§ 40-8-73.1(b)(1)). One exception: a transparent item that is not red or amber in color may be placed on the uppermost six inches of the windshield (§ 40-8-73.1(c)(4)). Georgia measures the strip in inches from the top — the statute does not use an AS-1 line. Required federal, state, or local stickers and certificates are separately exempt (§ 40-8-73.1(c)(5)). Windshield rules are separate from side-window limits in Georgia — see the breakdown above.
What happens if my tint is darker than Georgia allows?
Over-dark tint can draw a citation and, in many states, a fix-it order requiring the film to be removed and the vehicle re-inspected. Laws also change — verify the current statute before tinting.
